Turning challenges into success

junior cycling program

Remember back when you were 8 years old, what was your most coveted possession and what was the best Christmas present you received?  It was a bike wasn't it?

I think we all can agree that riding a bike as a kid is a "right of passage" that just about all of us had.  And up until a short time ago, this right of passage was something not experience by most children with disabilities.  We live in exciting times, and the junior sized handcycles now allow this reality.

However, unlike the 100 or 200 bucks a parent will generally have to spend on kid's bike that they will likely out grow in a few years, handcycles, even the kid's sized ones, can cost upwards of $2,000!

The sport of handcycling has enriched my life in so many ways, and that is why several years ago I converted the non-profit foundation that funded much of my competition expenses into the Junior Handcycling Program.
It is our desire to create a greater quality of life through cycling.

Although we do not necessarily give bikes away, we have a loaner program for which kid's can keep bikes for an extended period of time.  We also will assist in fund raising activities as well as are able to procure bikes at significantly reduced prices.

Please see below how you can donate to the fund, get involved, or come out on rides with us.   Here are a few photos of our elated participants.

Along with local informal 'fun' rides', we are also proud to be involved with the upcoming, and 3rd annual kids try-athlon.  This is a true triathlon which involves swimming, biking and running, and is catered for kids with disabilities.   The event is not timed so the focus is not on winning but rather on participating.  And if you choose not to participate in one of the 3 parts, that's ok too!  Click on the above link or go to www.bluepantsracing.com for more information, pictures of past event, and video of media coverage.

So if you are looking to get involved, just CONTACT us at anytime!

Also, if you wish to make a TAX DEDUCTIBLE donation, our non-profit fund is managed through Perimeter Bicycling Association of America.  That's right, the group that puts on the world famous El Tour De Tucson!

Checks can be to be made out to Perimeter Bicycling, attn: handcycle fund and mailed to: Perimeter Bicycling, 2609 E Broadway, Tucson, AZ 85716.
